Attention (1)

?
What is attention?
Something that is occupying your consciousness and driving your behaviour
1 of 15
What is attentional capture?
orienting to a stimulus
2 of 15
Why is attention useful in relation to shape and colour?
To combine these features of the visual field as they enter the visual system separately. Location is the common element of the two that allows them to be recombined.
3 of 15
What did Posner (1980) find?
That attention can be allocated to the stimulus location before the stimulus occurs
4 of 15
What does Posner (1980) suggest about the brain's organisation?
That is has a top down stimulation (as you have to put attention in places where there isn't any stimulation)
5 of 15
How do we know the brain has 'maps'?
We attend to specific locations
6 of 15
What is an egocentric map?
a map representing the location of objects relative to the body axes of the self
7 of 15
What is an allocentric map?
a map representing the location of objects relative to other objects
8 of 15
Which condition results from damage to visual maps?
Visual Neglect: Vision is unimpaired but one side of vision is neglected
9 of 15
Damage to which lobe results in visual neglect and why?
The parietal lobe. Because it creates a 3D visual world in the present and manages the spatial look of our memories.
10 of 15
Which side of space does the left parietal lobe manage?
the right side
11 of 15
Which side of space does the right parietal lobe manage?
the left side (it can also attend to the right side, just not as well)
12 of 15
What visual features need to be integrated to for a coherent percept?
shape, colour, texture, size and motion
13 of 15
What is an illusory conjunction and which researcher demonstrated it?
When features are mis-combined. Anne Treasman (red X, blue O study)
14 of 15
What increases reaction time when searching for a specific feature?
