Laboratory Experiment
An experimental method that takes place in an artificial setting, including an artificial task, measuring a DV and manipulating an IV

Field Experiment
An experiment that takes place in a natural/real life setting

Quasi/Natural Experiment
An experiment that has a naturally occuring IV

Independent Variable
Something that the researcher manipulates in an experiment e.g. caffine or no caffine

Dependent Variable
Something the researcher measures in an investigation - usually quantitative data

Ecological Validity
The extent to which the results from a piece of research can be generalised to other real life settings (high in a natural environment)

Demand Characteristics
When participant guesses the aim of research and changes their behaviour in order to please the researcher (reduces validity)

Self report methods
A questionnaire or interview

Social desirability bias
When a respondent gives and answer that they deem socially acceptable

Observation
Watching behaviour (can be covert or overt)

Qualitative data
Descriptive data (often thoughts or feelings)
