Biological Therapies- Electoconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Part 1.
General Anaesthetic & Muscle relaxent. Electrodes attatched to scalpes- small current passed through for fraction of a second. 2 Types: Bilateral & Unilateral. Lasts normally 1min and no recollection of treatment. 6-12 treatments.

Generates improvement in depressive symptoms. Seizure appears to restore brain activities to regulate mood. Enhances transmission of neurochemicals such as neuroarenaline and adrenaline by improving blood flow of the brain especially tempral region.

Biological Therapies- A02 Problems with measuring the effectiveness of ECT- Effectiveness.
Studies indicate 60-70% improve with ECT, however, Breggin found little evidence beneftis of ECT doesn't last longer than 4 weeks. Patients experience denial and artifical euphoria. ECT only good for short term effects.

Revies of 18 studeies with over 1000 patients. Compared to drugs, ECT found to be more effective. Cos ECT works much more rapidly than drugs. However, NICE believes that the risks associated with ECT much worse for children, older people & pregnants.
