This is when there is a real change of private views to match those of the group. This is a deeper and more permanent type of conformity

What is normative social influence?
The motive underlying NSI is the need to be accepted by other people. We want others to like and respect us, and being rejected is very painful. NSI is likely to lead to compliance

What is informational social influence?
ISI a basic need to feel confident that our ideas and beliefs are correct (need for certainty). If we conform to ISI, it’s very likely that we believe the opinions we adopt and therefore will demonstrate internalisation.

This study investigated the emergence of group norms using the autokinetic effect (a light in a totally dark room). Each participant was asked to judge how far the light moved.They were placed in groups of three and asked to announce their estimates

When participants were tested individually, they gave very similar estimates each time they were asked. However, between participants there was variation.When the participants worked in groups of three, their estimates converged into a group norm

A participant is seated with a group of 6-8 others who are in fact confederates of the experimenter, although this is unknown to the participant. They were then asked to match up the lines.

On trials where all the confederates gave the correct answer ( the control ) the error rate amongst the participants was 0.7%. The participants gave the wrong answer in 32% of the trials. 74% of participants conformed at least once.
