What is stereotyping?
A shared belief about the characteristics of those belonging to a particular social or physical group.

What is prejudice?
Prejudice is an attitude towards a particular group of people based on characteristics assumed to be common to all members of the group.

What is discrimination?
Treating someone unfavorably on the basis of their membership of a particular group.

Advantages of Stereotyping?
1. Give us a sense of belonging to a particular group because of a shared belief. 2. Simple way of organizing and remembering information about people.

Disadvantages of Stereotyping?
1.. Lead to assumptions about people. 2. Lead us to see members of the 'out group' as negative.

Describe Adorno's (1950) study into prejudice.
Adorno (1950)- Aim: Wanted to test the idea that a person might be prejudiced towards somebody else because of their personality. Method: Interviewed hundreds of former Nazi soldiers. Measured their responses using F scale.

Results: Found particular characteristics. They called it the Authoritarian personality. People with this tended to be: Rigid in opinions, negative towards those with an inferior role, unwilling to accept new ideas and situations.

Conclusion: Concluded that that those with these characteristics were more likely to categorize others into "us" and "them" groups, seeing their own as more superior. Research indicated that they were also more likely to have had a strict upbringing

Evaluate Adorno's (1950) study into prejudice.
Strengths: (Research Method) Detailed info obtained, better attention to points of view. Weaknesses: Doesnt explain why people are prejudiced or why we are prejudiced towards certain groups. Not all prejudiced people have strict parents.
