Field Experiments
An experiment that takes place in a natural setting within which the researcher manipulates IV and records DV
1 of 18
Lab experiments
Takes place in an controlled environment, within which researcher manipulates IV and records DV and maintains control over EV.
2 of 18
Experimental method
Involves manipulation of IV , record DV and can be Field, Lab, Natural or Quasi.
3 of 18
Aim
General statement of of what researcher intends to investigate.
4 of 18
Independent Variable (IV)
Aspect of the design that the researcher manipulates (or changes naturally).
5 of 18
Dependent Variable (DV)
The one measured by the researcher, affected by IV.
6 of 18
Extraneous Variable (EV)
Any other variable other that IV and DV and could affect DV if not controlled.
7 of 18
Confounding Variables (CV)
Vary systematically with the IV, Any variable other than IV that may have affected DV.
8 of 18
Alternative Hypothesis
States that there is a relationship between the two variables being studied (one variable has an effect on the other). It states that the results are not due to chance and that they are significant in terms of supporting the theory being investigated
9 of 18
Null Hypothisis
States that there is no relationship between the two variables being studied
10 of 18
Directional (one tailed) Hypothisis
States the direction of the difference or relationship.
11 of 18
Non-Directional (two tailed) Hypothesis
Doesn't state the direction
12 of 18
Levels of the IV
Different IV's tested
13 of 18
Operationalistation
Clearly defining variables in terms of how they will be measured.
14 of 18
Replication
Whether it can be done again, more reliable if it can be replicated.
15 of 18
Mundane Realism
Is a measure of external validity, or the extent to which experimental findings can be generalized to the real world.
16 of 18
External validity
Refers to the extent to which the results of a study can be generalized to other settings (ecological validity), other people (population validity) and over time (historical validity).
17 of 18
Informed Consent
Whether the participant is truly informed on the experiment and allows there data to be used
