Psychology Research Methods

?
What is a Longitudinal Study?
Research that takes place over a long period of time - often a form of repeated measures design. Can take place over several years
1 of 10
What is an advantage of a Longitudinal Study?
NO INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES: due to often using repeated measure design - comparisons are made between the tests of the SAME person (not different)
2 of 10
What is a disadvantage of a Longitudinal Study?
MORE LIKELY TO DROP OUT: compared to other methods due to the study taking a long time. This could lead to a bias sample or a SMALL SAMPLE that is harder to generalise
3 of 10
What is a Cross-Sectional Study?
An alternative way to study the effects of age. One group of participants at a young age compared to another older group of participants but at the same point in time(e.g. 2012)
4 of 10
What is an advantage of a Cross-Sectional Study?
RELATIVELY QUICK: compared to a longitudinal study they can be conducted in less than a year; whereas longitudinal studies can take several years/decades
5 of 10
What is a disadvantage of a Cross-Sectional Study?
COHORT EFFECTS: a group of people who are the same age would share certain experiences which could influence the behaviour being measured - reducing the validity of the research
6 of 10
What is a CAT Scan?
COMPUTED AXIAL TOMOGRAPHY: taking a series of x-rays and combining them to form a 2D/3D picture of the area being scanned - a die is normally injected into the patient as a contrast material
7 of 10
What is an example of where a CAT scan was used?
JOHNSTONE ET AL: used CAT scans to show that the brain of people with SCHIZOPHRENIA were different to normal brains
8 of 10
What is an advantage of a CAT scan?
USEFUL: at revealing abnormal brain structures such as tumours/structural damage - the quality of the images is much higher than traditional x-rays
9 of 10
What is a disadvantage of a CAT scan?
RADIATION: they require much more radiation than x-rays and the more detailed/complex the CAT scan is, the more radiation exposure the patient receives
