psychology - define

?
define aim
what the researcher intends to find out in a research study
1 of 13
define independent variable
manipulate variable to get different results
2 of 13
define dependent variable
change you measure, changes as result of IV changing
3 of 13
define experimental method
manipulate a variable to find if changes cause changes in another variable
4 of 13
define demand characteristics
high risk that Ppts may change behaviour to line up with the aim of study
5 of 13
define operationalising
exactly how a variable is going to be manipulated or measured
6 of 13
difference between control + experimental group
experimental receives variable thats being tested, control doesn't get variable thats tested
7 of 13
define extraneous variables
any variables other then IV that can effect DV, should be controlled where possible, e.g. surroundings
8 of 13
define confounding variables
anything other than IV thats affected DV, not sure of true source of changes to DV, unintentional IV, extra variable not accounted for
9 of 13
define null hypothesis
states no effect of IV on DV, nothing will happen, 'there will be no significant difference...'
10 of 13
define alternative hypothesis
predicts affect of IV on DV
11 of 13
define directional hypothesis
gives specific details on how the IV has affected the DV, gives facts e.g. more or less, numbers
