Demand characteristics
When people change their behavior to what they think someone wants to see

Independent variable (IV)
The variable being changed in an experiment

Dependent variable (DV)
The variable being measured during an experiment

Extraneous variable (EV)
These are variables other than the Iv that could affect the DV and so need to be controled

Whether the experiment is a true measure of what you intended to measure

Participant
Someone who is used in an experiment

Volunteer (self selecting) sample
Where the participants volunteer to take part in an experiment

Stratified sampling
Where participants are selected in proportion to the qualities of the target population

Random Sampling
When everyone in the population has an equal chance of being selected to be part of a sample

Opportunity sample
When participants who are ready and willing at the time of the experiment take part in the experiment

Reliability
Whether the results of an experiment are reproducible

Independent measures design
Where each participant only takes part in one condition of the experiment

Matched pairs design
When participants are paired depending on similar qualities and one of the pairs takes part in either condition of the study
