Meltzoff and Moore.

What ages did Meltzoff and Moore study?
Two to three week old babies.

Who observed the babies in the 1977 study?
An adult model who did three facial expressions, the infants had a dummy placed in their mouths during the display so that there was interactional synchrony.
3 of 9
Why was the dummy removed?
So that the observer could see the pattern at which the baby performed the behaviour, and it was videotaped to see if the infant imitated and to act as evidence.

What were the 4 catergories to see the behaviour?
Mouth opening, termination of mouth opening, tongue protrusion, termination.

How did the observer score the study?
Each observer scored the tape twice, both inter and intra observer reality - all greater than 0.92.
6 of 9
What are the imitation behaviours learnt?
That there was an association between the model and the behaviour of the infant.

What was the study following ?
It followed interactional synchrony - the timing and the pattern of an interaction, can include caregiver and infant mirroring.

Is the child really imitating - who opposed the study?
Piaget - a very famous psychologist - it was highly unlikely, too young, translate and convert into matching movements. Highly unlikely coincidental, baby's always open their mouths.
