?
what have biochemical studies shown?
Neurotransmitter levels cause mental abnormality (serotonin levels linking with depression)
1 of 22
why is it difficult to establish the cause and effect of serotonin and depression?
because the two variables aren't in the control of the experimenter so therefore it could be either way that serotonin and depression link
2 of 22
what is natural selection?
its the gradual process by which we inherit characteristics that offer some environmental advantages to the individual
3 of 22
what are the adaptive behaviours we have evolved to have in the modern day?
flirting, stress, aggression and OCD
4 of 22
how can the biological approach explain evolution and human behaviour?
the natural and sexual selection therefore mental health disorders like OCD are passed through out genes because people with OCD may be more likely to survive
5 of 22
what is the problem with the evidence form evolution?
we cannot test it because we only have second hand data as it takes millions of years to complete
6 of 22
strengths of the biological approach?
strong supporting research evidence and scientific
7 of 22
weaknesses of the biological approach
reductionist and determinist
8 of 22
what is the central nervous system?
the brain and the spinal cord - responsible for controlling thoughts, body movements and allowing us to interpret our external enviroment
9 of 22
what is the PNS
the peripheral nervous system - responsible for connecting g the central nervous system top the limbs and origins in the body
10 of 22
whats the somatic nervous system?
in the PNS and it transmits information to and from the senses to and from the CNS - control involuntary processes
11 of 22
what is the autonomic nervous system?
in the PNS - transmits information to and from the internal organs to sustain life processes - control involuntary processes
12 of 22
what is the sympathetic nervous system?
increases bodily activities - fight or flight
13 of 22
what is the parasympathetic nervous system?
decreases bodily activities
14 of 22
what are the three neurones ?
relay, motor and sensory
15 of 22
what is the sensory neurone?
transmit sensory information (sight, smell, sound) UNIPOLAR
16 of 22
what is the relay neurone?
enable communication between the motor and sensory neurones and the CNS - MULTIPOLAR
17 of 22
what is the motor neurone?
carry signals from the brain to the organs, gland and muscles MULTIPOLAR
18 of 22
what are the parts of the neurone?
dendrites - cell body - axon - myelin sheath - node of ranvier
19 of 22
what is the process of synaptic transmission?
electrical impulses travel down the axon then to the vesicles - they release their contents along the synapse - the neurotransmitters in the adjacent neurone bind to the receptors and are then converted back to and electrical pulse
20 of 22
what are excitatory neurotransmitter?
they are the 'on switch' and they increase the likelihood of the post synaptic neuron firing
21 of 22
what are the inhibitory neurotransmitters?
they are the 'off switches' they decrease the likelihood of the neurone firing
22 of 22
