When an individual changes their beliefs, attitudes or behaviour to fit in with a group and avoid rejection.

What is compliance?
When an individual alters their behaviour and opinions to that of a group in order to avoid rejection. It is a weak and temporary form that is displayed only in public.

What is identification?
When an individual alters their behaviour and opinions to that of a group as membership is desirable, but may still behave differently in private.

What is internalisation?
When an individual truly converts behaviour and opinions to that of a group and accepts their entire belief system both publicly and privately.

What are the two explanations for conformity?
Normative social influence and Informational social influence

What is normative social influence?
The desire to be liked - when an individual conforms to fit in with a group to avoid rejection.

What is informational social influence?
The desire to be right - when an individual conforms because they are unsure of the situation and follow the 'expert' who they believe to have more information.
