Mental processes of which we are not aware.

Oral stage
Birth to 18 months, Mouth is focus of pleasure, if continues till adulthood. they will be optimistic, admiring of others and gullible.

1-2 year olds, brings a focus of pleasure on the anus with expulsion and retention of faeces.

If parents are too lenient the adult will have an anal expulsive character

3-5 years. Focus of pleasure in the genital region.

Repression of desires.

Starts with puberty. Focus on genitals and formation of heterosexual relationships and friendships.
