Freud famously described dreams as 'the royal road to the unconscious mind'

What did Freud propose about dreams?
Freud said that the unconscious mind expresses itself through dreams, and the content of a person's dream can therefore reveal the content of the unconscious mind.

What did Freud believe about dreams and wishes?
Freud believed that all dreams were te unconscious fulfillment of wishes that could not be satisfied in the conscious mind.

What do dreams do?
Dreams protect the sleeper (primary-thought process)but also allow some expression to buried urges (wish fulfillment).

What does 'expressed symbolically' mean?
This is where the latent content is transformed into a more inoffensive form called the manifest content. The manifest content is how the unfulfilled wishes appear in the dream.

During dream therapy, what needs to be considered according to Freud?
According to Freud, it is necessary to consider the symbols of somebody's dream in context with their life. This is because a symbol could mean different things depending on the person.

Freud also recognises that not everything in a dream is symbolic. He, himself said that 'sometimes a cigar is just a cigar'

What is dreamwork? What are the processes of Dreamwork?
Dreamwork is the process by which the latent content gets turned into the manifest content. The processes inside dreamwork are condensation, displacement, representation, symbolism and secondary elaboration.

What is condensation?
Condensation is where the rich thoughts of a dream are condensed into brief images that may symbolise different things.

What is an example of condensation?
A vase of flowers may show feelings towards our mother as well as self confidence.

What is displacement?
Displacement is where the emotional significance of something is completely detached and binded to something else. This is so the content of a dream is not 'censored'.

An argument with our mother may be shown as someone shouting at a shop assistant.

Representation is where a thought is translated into a visual image.

A black cat might represent the dreamers feelings of misfortune/bad luck in their lives.

Symbolism is where a symbol replaces an action, a person or an idea.

A dream involving an exam paper may symbolise someones feelings towards college.

What is secondary elaboration?
Secondary elaboration is where the unconscious mind collects all of the images and ties them together to from a logical story.

What is the role of therapist during this therapy?
The therapist's role during this therapy is to decode the manifest content of the dream and uncover the latent content of the dream. They must also offer more than one interpretation of the client's dream and let them choose the most suited to them.
