What therapy did Freud develop?
Psychoanalysis - designed to access the unconscious such as dream analysis, &is still used by psychotherapists today. Aims to bring unconscious conflicts into the conscious.

Why do we dream?
the id is seen as responsible for our dreams as it's the source of wishes & fantasies, associated with irrational, instinct driven & pleasure seeking thoughts. These thoughts are unacceptable in adult conscious minds so they're repressed into dreams

How is the content of our dreams expressed?
Symbolically. Real meaning of a dream is transformed into a more innocent form. These symbols could be meaningless to anyone but a psychoanalyst, who's trained to interpret symbols.

What was Freud's theory based on?
intensive study of single individuals often in therapy - case studies. Observations = detailed + carefully recorded, however, universal claims about behaviour shouldn't be based on studies w/ small samples of individuals. subjective interpretation

What did Popper argue about the psychodynamic approach?
It cannot be falsified - theories cannot be empirically tested and be disproved. Falsifying theories means you don't waste time researching it since you can never fully prove a theory

What's our behaviour determined by? (psychodynamic approach)
All behaviour is driven by unconscious forces, therefore our behaviour is determined by unconscious conflicts. Freewill is an illusion
