PS1015 Research design- Quasi Design

?
What is a quasi-experimental design?
A design that cannot randomise participants into conditions but can still change the IV and measure the DV.
1 of 7
What are the problems of using quasi-experimental designs?
(1) Unequal group- more likely to make a Type 1 error, incorrectly concluding IV influences DV. (2) Maturation- differences in groups rather than in IV (3) Instrumentation- units of measurement may not always be equal. (4) Statistical regression
2 of 7
Why are quasi-experimental designs used?
(1) Certain groups of participants are tested (2) Expense (3) Social Conditions (4) Ethics (5) Retrospective study evaluated
3 of 7
What is a nonequivalent group design?
2 or more groups used that are not randomly assigned. There is a comparison group used to make inferences about the treatment group.
4 of 7
What is an interrupted time series design?
A group of single participants are repeatedly studied. (ABA format)- Pretest treatment measured, applied treatment, post treatment measured.
5 of 7
How are ex post facto studies different to the other designs mentioned?
Ex post facto studies has an IV that has already naturally occurred. The participants are still not randomly assigned. E.g. sex of participants.
6 of 7
State 4 problems of using a pretest-post test design
(1) History (2) Maturation (3) Hawthorne effect (4) Random fluctuations
