Protein Structure

?
Primary Protein Structure
Proteins are molecules made up of amino acids which are linked together
1 of 7
Peptide Bond
A chemical bond between one amino acid and the next one which links them together
2 of 7
Polypeptide Backbone
The repeating links of the amino acids which form the protein
3 of 7
Secondary protein structure
Regions within the linked chains which are organised into structures called-alpha helixes and beta pleated sheets.
4 of 7
Tertiary protein structure
The way in which the whole chain links itself into the three dimensional shape
5 of 7
Alpha helix
This looks like a loosely coiled spring. The 'alpha' refers to the direction the coils turn which is clockwise.
6 of 7
Beta pleated sheets
The w3ay in which the chains are folded together so it looks as though they are lying alongside each other
