What is high specific heat capacity?
The energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree.
1 of 9
How is high specific heat energy useful to living organisms?
It prevents rapid temperature changes, allowing the organism to keep it's temperature fairly stable
2 of 9
What is latent heat of evaporation?
The amount of heat energy required to change a liquid into a gas
3 of 9
How is water's HIGH latent heat of evaporation useful to living organisms?
the evaporationg water causes the liquid's surface to cool and help's to lower the temperature
4 of 9
What is Cohesion?
The attraction between molecules of the same type
5 of 9
Why are Water moleules cohesive?
They are POLAR
6 of 9
Why does water have a lower density when solid?
the water molecules are held further apart in ice
7 of 9
Why is this useful to living organisms?
The ice forms an insulating layer on top of the water; the water below does not freeze, and so neither do the organisms
8 of 9
How does water's solvent properties help living organisms?
Water can dissolve useful ions and substances which the organism can then take up
