Water includes hydrogen and oxygen which together are a...?
Covalently bonded molecule - shared pair of electrons
1 of 12
Oxygen is ...?
Electronegative
2 of 12
Oxygen becomes ....
Negative
3 of 12
Hydrogen becomes ...
Positive
4 of 12
Water is...?
Polar
5 of 12
Because of this, ____________ form between water molecules
Hydrogen bonds
6 of 12
Why is water liquid at high temperatures?
Due to the hydrogen bonds between molecules, making it hard for molecules to escape to become a gas.
7 of 12
How does ice float on water?
As the temperature reduces, water molecules have reduced kinetic energy and more hydrogen bonds form and water becomes solid. This form is less dense than liquid water so ice forms on the surface of water as it cools.
8 of 12
How does ice floating on water help aquatic organisms?
It allows aquatic organisms to live under the ice and be insulated.
9 of 12
How does water have a high specific heat capacity?
Due to hydrogen bonds restricting movement of water, so a large amount of thermal energy is needed to increase the temperature
10 of 12
Why is this property of water useful in living organisms?
This keeps the temperature of water, such as lakes stable even when the temperature changes dramatically, therefore allowing living organisms to not be affected by temperature changes of the water.

Transport of Xylem relies on...
Cohesion of water
