Organise staff training in Anti-discriminatory practice
Make this a key part of staff induction for new members so they understand its importance before coming into contact with the service user. Keep training on-going to reinforce importance. Keep staff up to date on equal opportunities legislation etc.

Have a complaints policy for service users
Encourage service users to complain if they feel they are being treated unfairly. Ensure clear instructions are given to all on how they have the right to complain. Ensure service users are aware the policy is in place. Info retained in welcome book.

Directly challenging staff and service users when discrimination occurs
Speak to staff or service user to warn against this behaviour. Use disciplinary procedures (written/verbal warning, suspension, dismissal). Report staff or service user (helps provide quality care). Makes clear it is not tolerated (prevents)

Whistleblowing policy in place for staff
Encourages staff to report discriminatory behaviour. Confidential. Explain to staff how to report and how reports will be investigated. Disciplinary procedures can be used to combat this if allegations are true.

Set an example in their practice
Ensure resources reflect all cultures, ethnicities, family types. Treat all service users with respect. Acknowledge other races, religions, beliefs eg. halal meat/kosher food. Employ interpreters. Use appropriate language. Ensure info in all formats
