banned ‘manufacture, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors’, Volstead Act of 1920 enforced this law

many law enforcement officers involved in the trade // big breweries birbed local gov officials etc // hard to convict because many judges also bribed

GANGSTERS, BOOTLEGGERS AND SPEAKEASIES
b.leggers got alc overseas or illegal places in US - sold it to gangsters who'd run speakeasies - this then would boost prostitution, gambling etc// Al Capone! Took over the alc business, huge network of corrupt officials, lawyers etc
