What are the advantages of Press Forming?
1.Sheet Material - gives material a more 3D shape. 2.Stretch- material is stretched, requiring good ductility.
1 of 14
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Sand Casting?
ADVANTAGES- makes complex 3D shapes, appropriate for small runs, can be produced for Hollow sections. DISADVANTAGES- poor surface finishing, not very accurate.
2 of 14
What are the types of degradation plastics?
STABILITY OF PLASTICS- some are less stable when outside. WEATHERING OF PLASTICS - oxygen and UV lights.
3 of 14
What is Steam Bending?
involves moistening timber in a steam chest to the point when it is more pliable.
4 of 14
What is Work Hardening?
Occurs when the material is cold worked. It results the crystals in the worked area, distorting them and making them harder. To return the material back it has to be annealed where it is heater to red point then left to cool.
5 of 14
What is power coating?
Uses an electrostatic charge to coat the metal products.
6 of 14
What does 50th percentile mean?
the 'average' or most common anthropometric measurements from sampling.
7 of 14
What are shape memory alloys?
Metal alloys specifically developed to remember their shape under specific conditions.
8 of 14
What is Quarter Sawn Conversion?
A form that can prevent warping and enhance the grain in wood.
9 of 14
What are the 4 Process colour prints?
Cyan, Magenta ,Yellow, Black
10 of 14
What is plasticity, malleability & ductility?
PLASTICITY - changes a material with external forces. MALLEABILITY-deformation by compression DUCTILITY-ability to be drawn out.
11 of 14
What is Screen Printing? What are the uses?
Transfer onto paper and fabric and to also transfer onto ceramics. BENEFITS- can print thick deposits and non-impact method.
12 of 14
What are splits in wood?
Splits occur when the material is drying or from hazards like lightening.
13 of 14
What are the different defects in wood?
DRY ROT- reduces the wood to a dry, powdery consistency, lacking in strength. WET ROT- breaks down the material by decomposing it. INSECTS ATTACK- they la ytheir effs in pore
