Product Design: Manufacturing Products

?
What is on off production?
This is when you design and make a single product. The product is designed and made for a specific purpose.
1 of 11
What are the consequences/conditions of on off production...
When a single product is designed and made, all the costs including designing, making and transportation are built into the cost of that one product - which usually makes the item expensive. On off production is slow which adds further to the cost.
2 of 11
One-off production involves...
...highly skilled workers who undertake a broad range of tasks using generalised tools and equipment.
3 of 11
What is batch production?
Batch produced products are identical and made at the same time in either large or small
4 of 11
What is (JIT) Just in time production?
Each part of the product is planned to arrive on the production line just in time for its assembly.
5 of 11
How does JIT work?
JIT involves working closely with suppliers. The company upholestering the car seats needs to know exactly how many are needed and when. Its the company job to organise their delivery to the production line. This is known as logistics.
6 of 11
What are the advantages and disadvantages of JIT ?
Advantage - less money is tied up in the storage of parts. Disadvantage - late deliveries of goods, which stops the production line.

What is (EDI) Electronic Data Interchange?
This involves the transfer of structured data from one computer system to another without human intervention.
8 of 11
What is stock control?
Stock control requires careful planning to ensure that the business has sufficient stock of the right quality available at the right time.
9 of 11
Computer systems can monitor...
...when the product mght go out of stock and respond rapidly by sending EDI to request more.

What is 'stock out'?
If a company does not have the neccesary stock to meet orders, this can lead to a loss of sales and a damaged reputation. This may be experienced in various industries.
