Product design Criteria: Modern materials

?
What is a modern material?
A material that has been invented since 1960-70s & onwards.

How does fibreoptics work/ what do they do?
Transmit info using glass fibres, enables data ti be transmitted over long distances
2 of 15
How is the data in fibreoptics transmitted?
Binary, 0's and 1's. Allows massive amounts of data to be transmitted. At receiving end signal can be converted into electronic data.

Name 3 products that Liquid Crystal Displays can be found in
Calculators, Mobile phones, Laptop computers
4 of 15
How does LCD work?
small voltage is applied to crystals, orientation of crystals change to match path of electron flow.
5 of 15
Give the properties of Titanium and some examples of products/uses
High strength to weight ratio. Corrosion resistant. e.g. Aerospace, medical, mechanical industries
6 of 15
What temp does Polymorph soften at?
60, low melting point polymer.
7 of 15
Name the most useful Microfiber properties
Waterproof, breathable & lightweight. (60x thinner than human hair)
8 of 15
How are carbon fibers made?
carbon fibres woven into cloth, mixed with (epoxy) resin. forced into mold of desired shape in autoclave (steam heated oven).
9 of 15
What types of coated metals do you get (name material)?
Polymer coated mild steels and aluminium, PET or PP coated - transparent of range of colours
10 of 15
what are the Properties of coated metals, some apllication?
Food friendly, good chemical resistance, top layer can be printable. (food containers, soft drinks cans)
11 of 15
How are coated metals produced?
metal heated to 230, dipped into fluidised bath of thermoplastic granules that stick to metal.
12 of 15
What are the properties of Flexible MDF, why is this?
Flexible, groves of thinner sections allowed to be bent slightly.
13 of 15
What are the properties of Flexible Plywood, why is this?
flexible, only 3 layers. two outer laers open grained timber which is thicker than inner core, direction of grain determines direction of curv
14 of 15
What are the Properties of Aeroply
thin plywood of very high quality, lightweight, strength can be laser cut and include steembending
