Producing Chemicals

?
What are the five stages in the process of producing a useful chemical from raw materials?
1. Preparation of feedstack. 2. Synthesis. 3. Seperation of products. 4. Monitoring the purity of product OR Handling of by-products and waste
1 of 13
What are raw materials?
They are naturally occurring substances which are needed, e.g. crude oil, natural gas
2 of 13
What are feedstocks?
Feedstocks are the actual reactants needed for the process, e.g. hydrogen, ethanol
3 of 13
What has to happen to the raw materials to make the feedstock?
Purified or changed
4 of 13
When feedstocks are converted into products, what has to be controlled?
The conditions have to be controlled to make sure the reaction happens, and at a sensible rate
5 of 13
what do chemical reactions usually produce?
The substance you want and some other chemicals known as by-products.
6 of 13
Are the by-products useful?
They may be useful, or they might be waste
7 of 13
In chemical reactions what else may be present?
Left-over reactants
8 of 13
For the products to be dealt with in different ways what has to happen?
Everything has to be seperated out
9 of 13
What happens to by-products?
They are sold or used in another reaction
10 of 13
If the reaction is exothermic, what might there be waste of?
Waste heat
11 of 13
Heat exchanges can use excess heat to produce what? And what does this save?
They produce steam or hot water for other reaction. They save energy and money
12 of 13
Why to waste products have to be carefully disposed of?
They don't harm people or the environment
