113 pps (group 1 34 females 30 males (average age 35.5)) (group 2 25 females 24 males average age 35.1)) All pps were attending a health centre in Britain- opportunist sample

How many questionnaires where there and how many did each pps fill out?
There where 2 questionnaires and each pps filled out one.

What was Group 1's questionnaire about?
Was on fear and avoidance (how near they would go to animal)

How many animals were there?
29 small harmless animals includin/insects including: rat, spider, worm, tortoise etc

What were the scales for fear and avoidance?
Fear, 3 point scale, 1=not afraid and 3= very afraid. Avoidance, 5 point scale, 1=enjoy picking it up, 2=would pick it up, but unpleasant, 3=touch it/go within 6 inches of it 4=stand 1-6 feet away, 5=Move further than 6 feet away

If it was impossible to actually pick up in the wild, what were pps told to imagine?
That the animal/insects were injured e.g bird had a broken wing.

What did they tell pps about certain animals that had species that were dangerous?
They were told that this particular species was not dangerous i.e snakes and jellyfish

What were group 2 told to fill in a questionnaire about?
Same 29 animals on a 3 point scale of how ugly/slimy/speedy they are and how suddenly they moved.

What was the scale for questionnaire 2?
1= not 2=quite 3=very.

Only used pps who didn't already have a phobia of animals
