Moral and Natural Evil
Human evil and world evil like natural disasters
1 of 15
Christianity Teaches
God gave humans the ability to choose right or wrong. Eve ate from the forbidden tree of knowledge and caused the fall. Evil is within everyone. Jesus came to earth to help humans ask forgiveness from God and salvation.

Last Supper
"Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

God of Christianity is meant to be omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent
Inconsistent Triad
4 of 15
Inconsistent Triad - God is not omnipotent, God is not omnibenevolent or evil does not exist
Direct evidence to support evil therefore either God has the power to stop evil but doesn't want to, or he wants to but can't. God doesn't exist.

Flew
God "dies the death of a thousand qualifications"

Aquinas argues
God's goodness is different to that of human goodness. The suffering of humans is part of God's bigger plan of love which we cannot understand.
7 of 15
Augustine believed
Universe was created perfect without evil and suffering. Genesis 1: "God saw all he had made and saw that it was very good"
8 of 15
God could not have created evil
Evil was a result of angels and humans turning away from God to achieve lesser pleasures. State of perfection was ruined by sin.
9 of 15
Natural Evil and Moral evil reasoning
NE - Loss of order in nature "penal consquence of sin" HE- Human free will and disobedience
10 of 15
Augustine argued
All humans are worthy of punishment, "seminally present in the loins of Adam"
11 of 15
We are worthy of punishment
therefore God doesn't have to interfere, but his love for us and his grace allows us to accept his salvation

Criticims
1. Either the world was not made perfect or God made it go wrong, if perfection existed it would mean the knowledge of both good and evil didn't exist, but the fall says otherwise, unjustifiable punishment for all humans for one human mistake.

Irenaen
God as well as humans are to blame for suffering and evil. God created evil to allow humans the ability to choose and develop themselves otherwise humans would just be good robots rather than moral agents.
14 of 15
Compassion, mercy, friendliness, love (positive attitudes) would be meaningless
If we don't experience both positive attitudes and negative attitudes such as loss and heartbreak we would not know the true understanding and meaning of the postitive attitudes.
