A power possessed by a certain object (a subject, a thing) to produce certain Ideas

Leads to a 'Veil of perception' doctrine where I do not perceive things directly

Primary Qualities
They are inseparable from the body. Locke: Solidity, Extension, Figure, Rest, Mobility and Number.

Size and motion
Aspects of a thing that can be measured and known objectively. Different to other qualities in that they are not dependent on one particular sense e.g. I can apprehend the size of an object through vision and touch.

Secondary qualities
Qualities dependent on senses. E.g. colours, sounds, tastes. I cannot see sounds.

Primary/secondary qualities distinction leads to:
A veil of perception doctrine and a causal theory of perception

The real world
The real world is matter in motion without colours, sounds etc.T he colour red is really a certain frequency of lightwave.
