Preparing and purifying an ester

?
Why is conc. sulfuric acid added?
It is a catalyst.
1 of 7
Why is the sulfuric acid added dropwise and why is the flask cooled in an ice bath?
The reaction between ethanol and ethanoic acid is exothermic - prevents uncontrolled boiling over.
2 of 7
Why is a reflux condenser used?
The reactant vapours of volatile compounds are condensed and returned to the reaction mixture - so no reactants or product is wasted.
3 of 7
Why is an electric heating mantle used to boil the mixture? *
Allows for controlled heating and stops flammable vapour lighting.
4 of 7
Why is sodium carbonate solution added after the first distillation?
Reacts with unreacted acid and catalyst remaining after distillation.
5 of 7
Why must the pressure be released at intervals after addition of the sodium carbonate solution?
The reaction produces CO2 so the pressure of this gas needs to be released to prevent explosions.
6 of 7
How will the organic liquid appear when dry?
Clear
