New pressure group politics
The rise of more loosely organised movements, direct action and grassroots activities. It is contrasted to how preassure groups used to be when they had formal structures and proceedures to bring their influence to bear.

Pressure group
A group of like minded individuals who come together on the baisis of shared interests etc. Preassure groups are a key feature of a pluralist democracy.

Single issue group
A prassure group or protest movement that focuses n a single issue as opposed to a range of issues underpinned by a broader set of guidingprinciples or an ideolgy. They often dispand once their centeral objective is achieved.

Trustee model
The Burkean model of representation provided for in a representative democracy. Politicians are returned to office on the understanding that they are free to use their judgement in the interests of their consticuents and the nation as a whole.

Delegate model
Those elected are expected to act in accordance wih clear instructions or guidelines provided by those who elected them to office.

Attitude cause groups
A group that seeks to change peoples' attitude on a particular issue eg. greenpeace

Political cause group
A group that campaigns in pursuit of a cause that is essentially politcal in nature eg. charter 88.

Sectional cause group
A group tat represents a specific section of society that is distinct from it own membership. For example, the NSPCC because it is for children but not set up and run by them.

Core insiders
An insider preassure group that works closely with government and is consulted rgularly across a broad range of policy areas.

Peripheral insiders
An insidr group whose area of expertise or interest is o narrow that governmnt would only rarely consult its members.

Specialist insiders
An insider grup with which the government conslts across oly a narrow range of policies.

ideological outsiders
Groups that avoid establishing close working relatioships with government for ideological reasons. Groups like amnesty international must avoid becming too close to the governent to keep their impartiality.

Outsiders by necessity
Preassure groups that are forcedto operate as outsider groups as a result of there being no realistic prospect of ewgular consultation wth government- weather because of the gorup's aims or is chosen methods.

Potential insiders
Outsider roups that might ultimately achieve insider status but are currently lacking in terms of support/exprience. Governments may think that they are lacking legitimacy.

Captive or prisoner groups
Preasure groups that are dependent on government. For example, EHRC was established under the equality act.

Direct action
Political protest that moves beyond traditional pressure group methods that may be violent. They aim to raise the profile of their cause. It is more popular since more converntional methods are becoming less effective.

Civil disobdience
The act of refusing certain orders given by the state but not voilence. For example the the campaign against the poll tax saw many people not paying their taxes.

Umbrella group
A preassure grup that brings together or speaks on behalf of a number of preassure groups that share a common interest. For example, the trades union congress (TUC) is an umbrella group.

Liberal Democracy
Is a style of democracy incorporating free and fair elections, and a belief in the importance of certain key rights and responsibilities.

Pluralist democracy
Is a system of government that encourages participation and allows for free and fair compeeting interests.

Representative democracy
Is where citzens elect representatives who enact laws on their behalf- but there is no obligation on the part of those who are elected to defer to or seek further approval from citizens before they introduce new policies.

Elite theory
Elite theory is the belief that modern societies are dominated by an elite that uses its privileged position to bnefit its own members while at the same time excluding others from the key descision making process.
