Sports were mostly reserved for men in pre-industrial Britain due to their violent nature and the perception of women being weaker. However… This reflected women’s role in society where they had limited responsibility.

Characteristics of education in Pre-industrial Britain?(Lower class)
The lower classes were largely uneducated during this period and this was reflected in the large-scale illiteracy of the time. This meant that most activities had limited written rules and they were unorganised with no regular fixtures scheduled.

The upper classes were more educated and could, therefore, produce rules and codes for the activities that they took part in. This helped them to organise their activities and keep them more sophisticated.

The lower classes were largely employed in manual labour jobs and, therefore, taking part in physical activity outside of work was mostly avoided.

The lower classes worked long hours and, therefore, popular recreation events were infrequent, only occurring during holidays when the lower classes had time off work. These events were local due to the lack of time available to travel for activity

The lower classes had limited disposable income and, therefore, physical activity was infrequent and basic with very little equipment.

The upper class had more money to spend on equipment for sporting use such as horses for fox hunting. They were also able to use the land that they owned which made it easier to take part in regular physical activity.

Transport was very limited therefore sports was localised

The upper classes had more access to transport but this was still limited. They were able to travel to sporting facilities such as land for hunting on.
