What is the Foucauldian idea of power?
That power is a relationship between two individuals and that it is influential thus it determines how we think, act, what we think is knowledge and what we prioritise. Power is not a thing, it is productive power so it cannot be possessed.

What is Foucauld's idea about the power 'net'?
People circulate between the net's threats and they are influenced by it and they use it. In this respect privilege is power, so if you are in power you don't recognise the net. To be marginalised you are constantly caught in the net

What is gender?
A social construct. It is not natural or genetic. It is expectations placed on sexed bodies which varies from one social context to the next

How is gender understood in a social structure?
It orders the relationship between those actors, organisations and institutions gendered as masculine and those gendered as feminine and we don't want to go outside of the two genders, otherwise it gets complex

We have socially learned behavious, repeated performances and idealised expectations to distinguish between male and female. If we go against the 'norms' we are shunned and then we start to perform

Rational, logical, intelligent, assertive, physical, autonomous

Irrational, illogical, lacking in superior intelligence, weak, passive, soft, nurturing and dependent

How is war gendered?
War is so gendered that it is seen as men going away to fight for the protection of women and you could not be seen as a good citizen if you were not a good solider first. Historically, women were too weak and domesticated and would fall apart in war

What is hegemonic masculinity as a power structure?
It is the ideal form of masculinity performed by men with the most power attributed to white, Western, upper-class, straight men

When rational, logical, assertive power is imposed on the state

It determines what we see as the primary actor; what we see as the most important power; it determines what knowledge counts more and whose knowledge counts more
