What is postmodernity?
an unstable, fragmented,media-saturated global village. In postmodern society we define ourselves by what we consume.

What do postmodernist say about knowledge?
There are no foundations to knowledge, no objective criteria we can use to prove whether a theory is true or false. This is known as anti-foundationalism

What are the two consequences of anti-foundationalism ?
1)The enlightenment projects way of achieving knowledge through science is lost, we cannot guarantee it is correct. 2)Theories that claim to have the absolute truth e.g. Marxism is just a meta-narrative

If postmodernists reject meta-narratives that claim absolute truth, what position do they take?
Relativist position - they argue that all views are true for those who hold them. No one has special access to the truth

If knowledge is not about truth, what is it about?
knowledge is just a series of different language games, or ways of seeing the world.

What does LYOTARD mean by language games?
Language games are very important and are used so participants can try to assert that what they say is true

What does BAUDRILLARD see society as based on?
the buying and selling of knowledge in the form of images and signs. The signs however, stand for nothing but themselves.

What does BAUDRILLARD mean by saying society has been replaced by the buying ans selling of signs and images?
Politicians, cars, pop stars etc. have become more associated with images than with any substance that might lie behind them .

How do Marxists criticise postmodernism ?
It ignores power and inequality. e.g. the idea that the media images are unconnected with reality ignores the R/C use of the media as a tool of domination.
