Porifera & Diploblasts

?
Characteristics of porifera
No symmetry, no HOX genes, no true tissue, sequential hermaphorditism (changes sex)
1 of 21
What is a choanocyte?
a beating flagella to pull water in for filter feeding
2 of 21
Examples of cnidaria
jelly fish, sea anemones, corals
3 of 21
Describe the process of gastrulation
single-layered blastula transformed into double-layered gastrula
4 of 21
2 body forms of cnidaria
polyp & medusa
5 of 21
What is the gastodermis?
The inner cavity of a polyp and medusa
6 of 21
How do cnidaria move?
Medusa use jet propulsion - coronal muscle relaxes, subumbrelar cavity expands and fills with water, then coronal muscles contracts, forcing water jet from cavity
7 of 21
Describe the nerve net in polyps
consists of sensort, motor, and interneurons. Dual nerve net connected by interneurones - allows multi-directional impulses
8 of 21
Describe the nerve net in medusae
Same as polyps but with additional nerve rings, ganglia function as a "pacemaker" for swimming muscles
9 of 21
What is a Chironex fleckeri?
sea wasp (jelly fish)
10 of 21
What is a Physalia physalis?
Portuguese man o' war (jelly fish)
11 of 21
What are the 4 classes of cnidaria?
Hydrozoa, Scyphozoa, Cubozoa, Anthozoa
12 of 21
Characteristics of hydrozoa
Mostly marine, both polyp and medusa stage, polyp stage often colonial
13 of 21
Examples of hydrozoa
Portuguese man o' war, hydras, Obelia
14 of 21
Characteristics of scyphozoa
Marine, reduced polyp stage, free-swimming medusae
15 of 21
Examples of scyphozoa
jellies, sea nettles
16 of 21
Characteristics of cubozoa
all marine, box-shaped medusae, complex camera eyes
17 of 21
Examples of cubozoa
box jellies, sea wasps
18 of 21
Characteristics of anthozoa
All marine, no medusa stage, mostly sessile, many colonial
19 of 21
Examples of anthozoa
sea anemones, most coral, sea fans
20 of 21
What is secondary radial symmetry?
bilaterally symmetrical larvae and radially symmetrical adults
