Abiotic
Non-living components e.g. temperature/rainfall
1 of 25
Biotic
Living components e.g. competition/predation
2 of 25
Ecosystem
The combination of the biotic and abiotic factors within a specific area, e.g. a lake
3 of 25
Population
A group of interbreeding organisms of one species in a habitat.
4 of 25
Species
A group of similar individuals capable of breeding to form fertile offspring.
5 of 25
Community
All the populations of different organisms living and interacting in a particular place at the same time.
6 of 25
Habitat
The place where a community of organisms lives.
7 of 25
Microhabitat
Smaller units within a habitat, each with their own microclimate.
8 of 25
Ecological Niche
How an organism fits into the environment - where it lives and what it does there. This includes its interactions with the biotic and abiotic features.
9 of 25
Abundance
The number of individuals of a species in a given space.
10 of 25
Frequency
The likelihood of a particular species occurring in an area.
11 of 25
Percentage Cover
An estimate of the area within a quadrant that a particular plant species covers.
12 of 25
Intraspecific Competition
Competition between individuals of the same species for resources e.g. food, water
13 of 25
Interspecific Competition
Competition between individuals of different species for resources e.g. food, water
14 of 25
Predation
The relationship between two organisms of different species where one has the role of predator and the other becomes its prey.
15 of 25
Selection Pressure
When individuals who are able to escape predation survive to reproduce passing on certain genetic traits.
16 of 25
Birth Rate
The ratio of live births in an area to the population of the area, expressed per 1000 population per year
17 of 25
Death Rate
The ratio of deaths in an area to the population of the area, expressed per 1000 per year.
18 of 25
Migration
The movement of individuals from one population to another.
19 of 25
Immigration
When individuals join a population from the outside.
20 of 25
Emigration
Where individuals leave a population
21 of 25
Stable Population
When birth rate and death rate are in balance, there is no increase or decrease in the population size.
22 of 25
Increasing Population
Where there is a high birth rate producing a wide base of a population pyramid. Common for LEDCs.
23 of 25
Decreasing Population
Where there is a lower birth rate and a low death rate so the base of the population pyramid is narrow and the top is wider. Common in MEDCs.
24 of 25
Average Life Expectancy
The age at which 50% of the individuals of a population are still alive.
