Populations and the enviroment

Chapters:

1- Populations

5- Energy and ecosystems

7 - Ecological succession

8- Inheritance and selection

?
enviroment
Both the biotic and abiotic components.
1 of 24
Biotic
All living components, e.g. competition and predation.
2 of 24
Abiotic
Non-living components, e.g. tempreture and rainfall.
3 of 24
population
A group of interbreeding organisms of one species in a habitat.
4 of 24
biosphere
The life supporting layer of land, air and water that surrounds the earth.
5 of 24
community
All the populations of different organisms living and interacting in a particular place at the same time.
6 of 24
Habitat
The place where a community of organisms live; within an ecosystem there are many habitats.
7 of 24
Niche
How an organism fits into the enviroment. It refers to where an organism lives and what it does. It includes all the abiotic and biotic factors needed for an organism to survive, reproduce and maintain a viable population.
8 of 24
Trophic level
The position of an organism, in a food chain.
9 of 24
food chain
The feeding relationship in which the producers are eaten by primary consumers
10 of 24
Ecosystem
The biotic community together with the abiotic community.
11 of 24
food web
When food chains are linked together to show the energy transfer in an entire habitat.
12 of 24
producer
Photosynthetic organisms that manufacture organic substances using light energy, water and CO2
13 of 24
consumer
Organisms the obtain their energy by feeding on other organisms.
14 of 24
Decomposers
The group of organisms that break down complex materials from the feaces or bodies of consumers and producers; and convert them to simple components. They release valuable minerals and elements in a form that can be absorbed by plants.
15 of 24
Productivity
The rate at which something is produced. The rate at which plants assimilate chemical energy is called gross productivity.
16 of 24
Pests
An organism that competes with humans for food or space, or could be a danger to health.
17 of 24
Pesticides
Poisonous chemicals that kill pests.
18 of 24
Succession
Describes the changes, over time, in the species that occupy a particular area.
19 of 24
Climax community
The organisms that make up the final stage of eccological succession.
20 of 24
genotype
The genetic constitution of an organism. It describes all the alleles that an organism contains. It sets the limits within which the characteristics of an organism can be expressed.
21 of 24
Phenotype
The observable characteristics of an organism. They are a result of the interatction between the expression of the genotype and the enviroment.
22 of 24
gene pool
All the alleles of all the genes of all the individuals in a population at any one time.
23 of 24
Allelic frequency
The number of times an allele occurs within the gene pool.
