What is the definition of a habitat?
The place in which an organism lives
1 of 26
What is the definition of a population?
All of the organisms of one species living in habitat at a particular time.
2 of 26
What is the definition of a community?
The population of different species in a habitat.
3 of 26
What is the definition of an Ecosystem?
All of the organisms living in a particular area and all of the abiotic conditions.
4 of 26
What are abiotic conditions?
The non-living features of the ecosystem e.g. temperature and water availability.
5 of 26
What are biotic conditions?
The living features of an ecosystem e.g. the presence of predators or food.
6 of 26
What is a niche?
The role of a species within its habitat e.g. what it eats and where and when it feeds.
7 of 26
What is an adaption?
A feature that members of a species have that increases their chance of survival and reproductive success.

How would you work out the total population size in mark-release-recapture?
Total population size = N. caught in 1st sample x N. caught in 2nd sample ÷ N. marked in 2nd sample
9 of 26
How do you work out Net productivity?
Gross productivity - Respiratory loss
10 of 26
How do you calculate human population growth?
Population Growth rate (per 1000 per yr) = Birth rate - Death rate
11 of 26
What is the equation for Hardy-Weinburg
P^2+2PQ+Q^2=1 and P+Q=1
12 of 26
What is the net gain of ATP from Glycolysis?
2ATP

What is the balanced equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy ----> C6H12O6 + 6O2
14 of 26
What is the balanced equation for Respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ----> 6CO2 +6H2O + Energy
15 of 26
What does the Hardy-Weinburg principle predict?
The frequency of alleles wont change from one generation to the next when there is a large population, no immigration, emmigration, mutations or natural selection.
16 of 26
An allele whos characteristic appears in the phenotype even when theres only one copy?
Dominant allele
17 of 26
An allele whos characteristic appears in the phenotype only when 2 copies are present?
Recessive allele
18 of 26
Alleles that are both expressed in the phenotype?
Co-Dominant alleles
19 of 26
An organism that carries 2 copies of the same allele
Homozygote
20 of 26
An organism that carries 2 different alleles
Hetrozygote
21 of 26
The Definition for Birth rate is?
The number of live Births each year per 1000 people
22 of 26
The Definition for Death rate is?
The number of people that die each year per 1000 people
23 of 26
____________ is where individuals with alleles for characteristics towards the middle of the range are more likely to survive and reproduce. (occurs when the environment isnt changing and reduces the rtange of possible phenotypes)
Stabilising selection
24 of 26
______ is where individuals with alleles for characteristics of an extreme type are more likely to survive and reproduce. ( may be due to environmental change causing genetic changes in the population)
Directional selection
25 of 26
2xPyruvate (3c) is produced in what process?
Glycolysis
