What is the First Past the Post (FPTP) system?
First Past the Post (FPTP) FPTP is the voting system used for the election of MPs to 'seats' in the UK Parliament. It is a system in which the 'winner takes all' and usually gives a clear majority both at constituency and national level.

What is the Alternative Vote (AV) system?
Voters rank candidates in order of preference. If one candidate fails to achieve a sufficient majority, the candidate with fewest number of first-preferences is eliminated and these votes redistributed. Process repeated until candiadate has majority.

What is the Supplemematary Vote (SV) System?
Under supplementary vote, voters are limited to indicating a first and second preference. The candidate who receives more than a half of first preference votes cast on the first count is deemed elected. If not the process is repeated.

What is the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system?
System of proportional representation in which a person's vote can be transferred to further competing candidates if the candidate of first choice is eliminated during a succession of counts or has more votes than needed for election.

What is the Additional Member System (AMS)?
The first vote used to elect a member from their constituency under a FPTP system. Second vote is used for a party which works to "top-up" seat allocations in Parliament etc. Evens out the votes to seats calculation thus making the election fairer

What are electoral systems?
Method to elect representatives. A voting system determines rules on how parties and candidates are elected. Systems used to elect mayors and representatives to the House of Commons, Scottish Parliament, National Assembly for Wales etc.
