First-past-the-post (FPTP)
An electoral system where voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins. FPTP is a plurality voting method.

Additional Member System (AMS)
A mixed electoral system with one tier of single-member district representatives, and another tier of 'additional members’, elected to make the overall election results more proportional.

Single Transferable Vote (STV)
A voting system designed to achieve or closely approach proportional representation through the use of multiple-member constituencies and each voter casting a single ballot on which candidates are ranked.

Supplementary Vote (SV)
Used for electing Mayors and Police and Crime Commissioners in the UK. It is a method to elect a single winner, in which the voter ranks the candidates in order of preference.

Safe seat
An electoral district in a legislative body which is regarded as fully secure for a certain political party.

Marginal seat
Also known as a swing seat, it is a constituency held with a small majority in a legislative election.

Minority government
A cabinet formed in a parliamentary system when a political party or coalition of parties does not have a majority of overall seats in the parliament.

Coalition government
A form of government in which political parties cooperate, reducing the dominance of any one party within that "coalition". The usual reason for this arrangement is that no party on its own can achieve a majority in the election.
