Legitimacy
The right and acceptance of an authority, usually a governing law or a regime.

Direct democracy
A form of democracy in which people decide on policy initiatives directly.

Representative democracy
A type of democracy founded on the principle of elected officials representing a group of people, as opposed to direct democracy.

Pluralist democracy
A political system where there is more than one centre of power. Pluralism may exist without democracy.

Something that occurs when seemingly democratic organisations or institutions fall short of fulfilling the principles of democracy

A situation where a large proportion of the population do not engage with the political process, for example by not voting in elections.

The right to vote in public, political elections.
