Ozymandias
Power of nature vs power of humans. The narrator meets a traveller who tells them about a statue of an arrogant king, his face is proud and inscription boastful. The statue has ironically broken down over time so only ruins remain.

London
The poem follows the narrator who describes his journey around London. It has a strong negative semantic field as it highlights the misery of everyone there. People in power, responsible for the damage, don't seem to help the people in need.

Extract from 'The prelude'
The extract focuses on a young boy finding a boat tied to a tree, he steals this boat and takes it on the lake. This makes him confident and happy. In the distance he spots a mountain on the horizon and the boy becomes scared of it's power.

The duke shows a visitor the painting of his dead wife, the duchess. Throughout the poem he expresses his anger at the duchesses behaviour, he didn't want to be treated like everyone. It's hinted that he had her killed. He arranges his next marriage.

The charge of the light brigade
During the Crimean war, british cavalry fought against russian forces. There was a miscommunication and the light brigade were ordered to advance. Swords against guns. They were practically defenseless. Many were killed, they should be honoured.

Exposure
Soldiers in world war one, lay awake in the trenches at night afraid of being attacked. Nature seems more of an enemy as they slowly freeze. They think about how sacrificing themselves in the war keeps their families safe. Thoughts of death return.

Storm on the island
The poem follows the story of a community 'prepared' for a storm. As the poem goes on they reveal they are not as prepared as they thought, this coincides with the storm becoming more powerful. As the storm hits they fear its power.

The poem highlights the fear a singular soldier feels as he charges into battle, it focuses on how he tries to stay alive. Theres a conflicting current fear compared to his previous patriotic attitudes.

A man is killed by a group of soldiers as he runs from a bank raid. His death is very graphic. A soldier suffers from PTSD because of the incident. He didn't know if the man was armed. He suffers guilt.

Poppies
The poem focuses on a mother's reaction to her son leaving home presumably to war (focus on poppies). We see her fear, anguish, dread and how lonely she is left. She goes to familiar places to find a trace of him.

A war photographer develops photos he's taken in his darkroom. The atmosphere seems odd to him at home compared to the war zones. As a photo develops he remembers a mans death and the cries of his wife. No one cares about the people in the photos.

The narrator talks positively about a city in a country she was forced to leave as a child. The city is under attack and unreachable and an unknown seems to accuse and threaten the speaker. But it is still positive. May not represent an actual place.

A Japanese bomber pilot goes to complete his mission but ends up coming home. His daughter believes this is because he saw beauty in nature and remembered his childhood. He was shunned when he returned home.
