Poet and context of A Wife in London
News of a soldiers death would be sent by telegram and so it would arrive faster than the soldiers letters, which were sent by normal mail. Thomas Hardy wrote the poem in 1899, during the Boer war. He was deeply against the war.

Sheers was born in 1974 and grew up in Wales. Battle of the Somme was fought in July-November 1916. Welsh soldiers were told to walk towards the Germans and there were many fatalities. People though the men had been treated badly.
