Plato did not think that we gained knowledge from our senses (empirically), because the world is constantly changing
empirical knowledge = knowledge gained through our senses

innate = knowledge that is gained through the mind rather than the senses, it is an essential part of our character

plato was a dualist
dualist = the belief that the humans are made of two distinct parts, the mind/soul and the body, the soul is immaterial but the body is physical

there are two types of beings, spiritual beings (souls) and material beings (houses, chairs, dogs)

the world we live in has examples of imperfect, reflected beauty = flowers, we are able to recognise the beauty, it is our souls that knew the Forms before we were born because they are immortal and eternal

what is the Form of the good
the highest form and the source of all the other forms

form of the good
the most important form is the form of the good, all forms are aspects of goodness. Plato said that the form of the good is the greatest thing we have to learn and that knowledge of the form of the good is an end in itself and gives meaning + purpose
