Plate tectonics key terms

Lithosphere
The crust of the Earth around 80-90 km thick
1 of 7
Asthenosphere
A semi-molten zone of rock underlying the Earth's crust
2 of 7
Plates
Rigid, less dense 'slabs' of rock floating on the asthenosphere
3 of 7
magma
molten material which rises from the Earth's surface when hotspots within the asthenosphere generate convection currents
4 of 7
constructive boundary
a boundary between plates where the plates are diverging or moving apart
5 of 7
destructive boundary
a boundary between plates where the plates are converging
6 of 7
conservative boundary
a boundary between plates where the movement of the plates is parallel to the plate margin and the plates slide past each other
