where does the apoplast pathway move through?
through the water-filled space between cellulose within cell walls- water doesn't move through any plasma membranes and therefore dissolved mineral ions and salts can be carried with the water.
1 of 12
If a pathway doesn't cross a plasma membrane what does this allow it to do?
dissolved mineral ions and salts can be carried with the water as it won't alter the water potential of the cell
2 of 12
where does the symplast pathway move through?
through the plasma membrane and then travels through the cytoplasm and plasmodesmata to go from cell to cell
3 of 12
where does the vacuolar pathway move through?
the same as the symplast pathway except water is also able to move through the vacuoles
4 of 12
what are the 3 different pathways that water molecules can take between cells?
Apoplast pathway, Symplast pathway, Vacuolar pathway
5 of 12
What causes turgidity and what does it mean?
if the cell is in a solution with a higher water potential than its own then water will move in by osmosis, this cause the cellt to swell and become firm, it will not burst as the cell wall provides strong structural support.
6 of 12
what causes plasmolysis and what does it mean
if the cell is in a solution with a lower water potential than its own then it will cause water to move out of the cell, it will therefore shrink and and cause the plasma membrane to pull away from the cell membrane.
7 of 12
What will the spaces cause by plasmolysis be filled with?
whatever solution surrounds the outside of the cell.
8 of 12
what is water potential measured in? (i.e. units)
kPa - kilopascals.
9 of 12
why do cells have negative water potential?
they contain dissolve salts and sugars
10 of 12
in what direction do water molecules move?
from an area of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential
11 of 12
what is the water potential of pure water?
zero
