Plant Disease

?
Signs that a plant may be diseased:
Stunted growth. Spots on leaves. Areas of decay. Growths. Malformed stems or leaves. Discolouration. The presence of pests.
1 of 10
How can a plant disease be identified?
Consulting a gardening manual or website. Taking infected plants to a laboratory to identify the pathogen. Using testing kits, which contain monoclonal antibodies.
2 of 10
Symptom of TMV
Distinctive "mosaic" pattern if discolouration on the leaves, which reduces chlorophyll content and affects photosynthesis
3 of 10
How does TMV affect a plant?
It affects the grownth of the plant due to lack of photosynthesis.
4 of 10
How do aphids affect a plant?
They feed from the phloem, taking sugars away from the plant
5 of 10
What is caused by nitrate defiency (plant)?
Stunted growth because nitrates are needed for protein synthesis
6 of 10
What is caused by magnesium deficiency (plant)?
Chlorosis because magnesium ions are needed to make chlorophyll
7 of 10
What physical defences does a plant have to stop the entrance of organisms?
Cellulose cell walls. A tough waxy cuticle on leaves. Layers of dead cells around stems (bark on trees), which fall off and take pathogens with them.
8 of 10
What chemical defences does a plant have to stop the entrance of organisms?
Antibacterial chemicals, which are made by plants such as mint and witch hazel. Poisons to deter herbivores, which are made by plants such as tobacco, foxgloves and deadly nightshade.
9 of 10
What mechanical adaptations does a plant have to stop the entrance of organisms?
Thorns and hairs to deter animals from eating or touching them. Leaves that droop or curl when touched. Mimicry to trick animals into not eating them or not laying eggs on the leaves.
