What are winds?
Horizontal movements of air on Earth's surface as a result of differences in air pressure.
1 of 12
What direction do winds blow?
From high to low pressure.
2 of 12
What happens if air temperature increases?
Air expands and rises, reducing pressure.
3 of 12
What happens if air temperature decreases?
Air becomes denser and sinks, increasing pressure.
4 of 12
What is the pressure gradient?
The gradual change seen in the pattern of isobars on a weather map.
5 of 12
What influences wind direction at the small scale?
Land and sea.
6 of 12
What can wind affect?
Temperature.
7 of 12
What affects temperature of the wind?
It's origin and the surface over which it has travelled.
8 of 12
Why in summer do winds blowing onto land from the sea reduce air temperature?
The sea over which they have travelled is cooler than the land surface.
9 of 12
Where are polar easterlies found and which direction do they blow?
Polar cell. From North-East to South-West.
10 of 12
Where are the westerlies found and which direction do the blow?
Ferrel cell. From South-West to North-East.
11 of 12
Where are the trade winds found and which direction to they blow?
Hadley cell. North-East to South-West in the Northern hemisphere, South-East to North-West in the Southern Hemisphere.
