explain two precautions that should be taken handling radiation

why are spent fuel rods more hazardous
Gamma radiation has a greater range than alpha. Most fission fragments are more radioactive/unstable and are neutron rich so decay by beta and gamma. ionising radiation damages tissue.

why is technetium used in medical diagnosis
It only emits gamma and so may be detected outside the body. weakly ionising so little damage. It has a short enough half life and will not remain active. it has a long enough half-life to remain active during diagnosis.

why do we get gamma emmision
following beta decay the nucleus is in an excited state which are discrete energies and emit gamma rays when they de-excite
