When you do a handstand, the pressure exerted on the ground is greater than on your feet when you stand upright.
pressure = force / area, so the smaller the surface area the pressure is exerted on, the higher the pressure is.

snowshoes (large ski-like shoes) are useful for walking across soft snow.
the surface area of these shoes is greater than those of normal shoes, therefore the pressure exerted on the soft snow is lower. this means you are less likely to sink in the snow.

why does the wall of a dam need to be thicker at the bottom than at the top?
because the pressure in a liquid increases with increase of depth. Water is at its deepest nearer the bottom of a river where the base of the dam is.
