When you do a handstand, the pressure exerted on the ground is greater than on your feet when you stand upright.
pressure = force / area, so the smaller the surface area the pressure is exerted on, the higher the pressure is.

snowshoes (large ski-like shoes) are useful for walking across soft snow.
the surface area of these shoes is greater than those of normal shoes, therefore the pressure exerted on the soft snow is lower. this means you are less likely to sink in the snow.

a rectangular concrete paving slab of weight 1200 N has sides of length 0.60 m and 0.40 m and a thickness of o.05 m. Calculate the pressure of the paving slab on the ground when it is: a) laid flat on a bed of sand, b) standing up on its short side
a) 1200 / (0.60 x 0.40) = 1200 / 0.24 = 5,000, b) 1200 / (0.40 x 0.05) = 1200 / 0.02 = 60,000

use g = 10 N/kg: calculate the pressure due to sea water of density 1050 kg/m^3 at a depth in the sea of 200 m.
pressure = height x density x gravity, so 200 x 1050 x 10 = 2.1 x 10^6 Pa (pascals)

why does the wall of a dam need to be thicker at the bottom than at the top?
because the pressure in a liquid increases with increase of depth. Water is at its deepest nearer the bottom of a river where the base of the dam is.

a) A (...) has a fixed shape and volume. b) A (...) has a fixed volume but no shape. c) A (...) and a (...) can flow. d) A (...) does not have a fixed volume.
a) solid. b) liquid. C) liquid and a gas. d) gas.

## Other cards in this set

### Card 2

#### Front

the surface area of these shoes is greater than those of normal shoes, therefore the pressure exerted on the soft snow is lower. this means you are less likely to sink in the snow.

#### Back

snowshoes (large ski-like shoes) are useful for walking across soft snow.

### Card 3

#### Front

a) 1200 / (0.60 x 0.40) = 1200 / 0.24 = 5,000, b) 1200 / (0.40 x 0.05) = 1200 / 0.02 = 60,000

### Card 4

#### Front

pressure = height x density x gravity, so 200 x 1050 x 10 = 2.1 x 10^6 Pa (pascals)

### Card 5

#### Front

because the pressure in a liquid increases with increase of depth. Water is at its deepest nearer the bottom of a river where the base of the dam is.
