How do we call particals?
Hadrons and leptons
1 of 20
What is a hadron?
A partical or antiparticle that interacts through the strong interaction and through the electromagnetic interaction if charged. They all, except protons, decay through weak interactions.
2 of 20
What is a lepton?
Partical or antipartical that interacts through weak interactions and through electromagnetic interaction if charged.
3 of 20
How do we further classify hadrons?
Baryons and Mesons
4 of 20
Baryon?
all hadrons that break down into protons, indirect or directly. (Protons, neutrons)
5 of 20
Mesons?
Dont break down into protons (K meson and pie mesons)
6 of 20
examples of leptons?
Electrons, neutrions, muons
7 of 20
How does the large Hadron Collider work?
Ring shaped accelrator that boots kinetic energy of charged particals in a ring. Magnets bend these particals to keep them in the ring. They then collide with other particals.
8 of 20
What happens to their energy when they collide?
The products have the total energy previous - the kinetic energy of the products.
9 of 20
What happens to their energy before they collide?
Before they collide they have their rest energy + kinetic energy.
10 of 20
What is conserved?
Their charge., lepton number, baryon number,, strangness if in a strong interaction, energy
11 of 20
What is strangeness?
An explanation for why certian particles were created easilly in a particle collision but decayed much more slowly then expected
12 of 20
Therefore, what is strangeness?
A value which describes decay in strong and electromagnetic interactions.
13 of 20
What are quarks and antiquarks?
Properties of hadrons can be explained by assuming they are composted of smaller fundermental particles, quarks and antiquarks. There are 3 diffrent types of quarks.
14 of 20
What are the 3 types of quarks?
up,down,strange.
15 of 20
What do Mesons consist of?
A quark and an anti-quark.
16 of 20
What is special about pie meson?
Can be any corosponding quark & antiquark pair.
17 of 20
Proton quark?
uud
18 of 20
Neutron quark?
udd
19 of 20
Quark and antiquark decay for B-?
Neutron to proton for B- and therefore we get a d to u.
